I have tarried in this village long,
spent time to touch the flowers,
smell the brown earth under my soles,
establish roots and relations,
promises and obligations,
that now it is not easy to leave.
Not that I have not enjoyed my stay,
for this is a place pleasant
with kinship and laughter,
comfort and pleasure
for an honest soul who knows
where to find such things.
But these feet are dressed in walking
shoes that, by their nature and mine,
must lift me from place to place
in quest of shapeless destiny though
at every stop the moment has to come
for departure's bell to ring.
The ties wrought here keep me
from quickly heeding journey's call.
Stand your feet still, trekker,
until love and commitment are
satisfied and will set you free
to cross the village gates.
Damn this long lived voyage,
my ecstasy and my curse.
There must be an end to it somewhere,
in blackness or in bliss. While
the finish is unseen, I must
listen to my restless limbs.
No gracious hamlet may hold me,
nor duties chain my heart.
